Warm Water Fish
Greetings Flyfishers:
If you are experiencing the summer doldrums with your trout fishing, try a change of pace. Check out some of the local ponds for bass and bream.
You might be surprised at the success that you'll have if you get out early and fish for a few hours.
We went on Thursday and Friday of last week. On Thursday, Gene and I got a late start and he had a call and had to leave early, so we only caught a few bream.
I went to the same pond on Friday and started at the break of dawn. I tied on a large popping bug and eased my kayak along the shoreline. There were a lot of downed trees in the water where the beavers had felled them. This made a perfect hiding place for the bass and bream.
After a few casts, I caught a feisty bass that blasted the popper. He made a few runs and I brought him to hand.
A little further along the shore and I caught a second one. The action slowed down, so I tied on a bream hook and a small float and one split shot. I added a little bait and started catching nice bream. I kept the two bass and seven nice bream and was home before lunch with a nice "mess" of fish.
The secret is to be there before the sun warms the water. After the sun rises, fish along the shady side and you should collect the makings for a nice fish fry.
I love to trout fish, but when it's slow, it sure is nice to be able to catch a few fish. Considering the ability of bream to reproduce, it doesn't hurt to remove some for table fare.
Get out there on the water and enjoy the bounty.
Have a great week.
Regards,
L. Woodrow Ross
