Chattooga River Update
Greetings Outdoorsmen:
After guiding the young man fly fishing on the Chattooga last week. I had to get out and try my own luck.
I called a friend, but he couldn't go, so I got up Sat. morning at 5:15 and ran by Bo Jangles and got a biscuit and some coffee. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to get to the river from where I live in Travelers Rest. I arrived about 7:30.
The water temp. was 43 degrees; 6 degrees colder than the previous week.
The cooler temp. made the fishing slow until about 9:00 and then I caught a 12" rainbow on an olive wooly bugger. I saw some fishing rising in the next pool upstream, so I moved up and tried the dry flies. The water was very clear due to lack of rain and low water, so I didn't connect.
I tied on an sub-surface pattern that I had tied (I tie all my flies). I proceeded to catch 7 or 8 fish in that pool, up to 15".
I fished about 2 more miles upstream and continued to catch fish.
The fishing slowed down about 2:00 and I fished another hour before starting the trek downstream to the parking area.
It was a great day. I caught 16 rainbows and missed a lot more as well as losing a few good fish. What the heck! I was going to release them anyway.
I got some great photos of fish and the fall color on the river. What a great time to be outdoors and a great place to fish.
